Sheldon Iowa — The Sheldon Orabs upset 9th ranked Spirit Lake Tuesday night in Spirit Lake in a match that went five sets. With the win Sheldon earned a spot in the 3A Region 1 Finals. The first two sets went to Spirit Lake on scores of 25-19 and 25-22. Sheldon trailed the Indians 17-10 and 23-21 in the third set before getting the win 25-23. Sheldon then took set four 25-16 to set up the deciding fifth set. The Orabs took control early and went on to a 15-8 win to post a 3-2 win for the match.Stat leaders for Sheldon included Payten Lode with 24 kills, Brooklyn Grady had 49 assists while Madison Van Meeteren led the team in digs with 24. As a team Sheldon had a .925 serve efficiency going 98-of-106 with 9 ace serves getting 3 each from Lode and Hannah Uhl. Makenna Kleinhesselink was the individual leader going 19-of-21 from the serve line.Sheldon will meet 12th ranked Unity Christian who posted a 3-1 win over MOC Floyd Valley in the lower bracket semifinal. The set scores were 25-23, 20-25, 25-17 and 25-20. Stat leaders for the Knights included Gracie Schoonhoven with 18 kills. Emma Byker had 45 assists while Janie Schoonhoven had 24 digs. The Knights were 90-of-94 serving for a .957 efficiency and 8 ace serves. The leader was Janie Schoonhoven who went 21-of-22 with 5 ace serves.With their upset win the Orabs forced a site change for the region final. The original brackets had Sheldon hosting the final but with the need for a neutral floor the region final the match was moved to the MOC Floyd Valley High School Gym. First serve remains at 7:00 pm Monday night with the winner advancing to the State Tournament in Cedar Rapids. Unity enters the match at 23-10 ranked number 12 in the final 3A poll. Sheldon will take a 21-13 record into the district final.
